EPA Releases Information About Disposing of Medical Sharps

Reasons for Fine:

One willful citation for failure to:

  • Provide employees with the hepatitis B vaccination within 10 days of their start dates

Three serious citations, including failure to:

  • Transport laundry contaminated by blood and bodily fluids in a labeled bag
  • Keep exits clear

Four repeat citations, including failure to:

  • Provide a sharps container in the laundry
  • Maintain an exposure control plan

Fine: $56,000

Reasons for Fine:

Five serious citations (substantial possibility for death or serious harm) including failure to:

  • Implement an effective bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan
  • Train employees in the dangers of bloodborne pathogens
  • Provide antiseptic wipes where washing facilities weren't immediately available

Four repeat citations, including failure to:

  • Train employees exposed to bloodborne pathogens
  • Maintain OSHA 200 logs

Two failure-to-abate citations, for failure to:

  • Implement an employee exposure control plan
  • Provide protective gloves and antiseptic wipes to employees
